With a little help from a friend

I've always wanted to try making a Grandmother's Flower Garden. Libby had posted the stars she's been working on. I commented that I wanted to try one and she emailed me where I could get the papers, gave me suggestions as to size and I was off and running. Now Libby prefers the 1/2" size but I thought....nope no way, I'm not working with something that small. I'm going bigger. I'm going for the 1.5" ones. So I place my order and it arrives days later. I'm excited....I'm ready to start my flower garden. I cut out my patches and proceed to stitch them around these 1.5" papers. After trying 6 or 7 of them with very poor results I"m ready to throw the whole thing in the trash. I should have listened to Libby and gotten the 1/2" ones because they would be much easier to stitch since they are much smaller and easier to handle. I emailed her again telling her of the error of my ways....how I didn't listen to her because Libby really did know best. Being the sweet dear lady that she is she told me not to fret....there really was light at the end of the tunnel. She gave me a few tips and here is my flower. Aren't bloggy friends just the best!!!!

Well aren't you the clever girl, and what a sweetie Libby is to help you out. Very pretty flower. How many are you planning on making?????

I have done some of the paper piecing that you are doing and it is fun and relaxing, but to make an entire quilt, now that would be a challenge. Yours looks absolutely perfect!! Keep up the good work.

I have a GFG in the making that I have been working on here and there for a few years. They are quite a committment. I'm using the Brandy's mylar templates for mine, I think mine are 1 inch. I am also making mine scrappy 30's, I got bored with the regular way of doing the "flower".

Success! How nice of Libby to give you pointers. Good luck with the GFG.

I bought the 1 inch papers at R2CA but now I can't remember how to do it. All I remember is the demo made it look easy. Your's looks great! You'll be whipping them out quickly now.

It's funny that you're working on one of these, because I just uploaded photos the other day to my friend Eileen's blog for her of the one she made back in the 60s. If you want to take a look at hers and read about it, here's the link:

It looks great! I love making these little hexagon flowers and have a sew ready to be sewn into a top. Although I love the traditional GFG quilts, I'll applique mine onto a background.

I use the plastic templates. you can buy them in bags of 50 for $10.00. you can reuse them and your hexagons will always be perfecto.

Congradulations, for making your first flower. They didn't have those papers back in the time I made mine. Good luck on doing enough for a quilt.
